Default XDA /PI? problem with international phone code

Using PocketInformant 5.1 on XDA 1 (O2, UK)

Some of my contacts sync'd from Outlook 2000 have their phone number in
International format (e.g. +44 (020) 7240 1234).

As the Regional settings on the XDA are set to UK, as are the Dialling
Location settings on the Connectons tab, I assumed that when selecting that
contact's number to autodial it, the XDA would know to drop the +44

This does not seem to happen - instead I get the O2 'wrong number' message.

Any ideas? Obviously it makes sense to store contact numbers in the
international format, as it makes it easier to dial from abroad (when the
user would have changed their dialling location).

Thanks

The XDA can handle numbers in two formats. Either full international:
+44 20 7240 1234
or local 0207240 1234.

The wrong number you are getting is because you can't have the country code
and the 0 in the area code at the same time.

Thanks, that worked (removing the 0 from the area code) - so I guess that
when present country location is set to UK, the XDA knows to a) not dial
+44, and b) insert a 0 in front of e.g. 20-7240-1234.

The only niggle is that Outlook 2000 seems to not be as slick - i.e. if I
enter a phone number as: '(020) 7240 1234', it stores it exactly as that
(i.e. without the +44).

If I double-click on this phone number, the +44 is shown in the dialog box,
and when I OK it, the number is saved thus: +44 (020) 7240 1234.

The problem of course is that Outlook 2000 has inserted/left the 0 of 020.
So, every number in Outlook would need the 0 manually removing.

At least, that's how I see it..?

I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that actually it's the phone network that's
smart enough to sort out +44 as meaning 0 when dialled from UK. It works on all mobiles.

I don't know about this bit, I don't ever enter numbers in Outlook. I think
that this may have been discussed in this newsgroup before, so a search of
the archives via Google groups might get you an answer.

<snip>

I'm not sure if you are, but don't put any brackets in the number, the PDA
won't parse them correctly. Just enter the number +44.... all my numbers are
in this format, UK or otherwise and work from wherever I dial.

cheers

The brackets are not the problem. The 0 (zero) prefix certainly is.

You are right. This is network functionality.

I've found at least one network that did not support it when I was in
Seattle.

The problem is with the zero in the local STD code. As
noted, either 020 7234 1234 or +44 20 7234 1234 will work
for London numbers. This is a problem with the Pocket PC
Phone edition software and microsoft needs to fix it!!

I have all my contacts listed in Outlook 2003 as +44
(020) 7234 1234 for London numbers and include the zero
for international numbers where applicable. Outlook will
dial British numbers as 020 7234 1234 and remove the zero
for international numbers e.g. 00 27 44 234 1234 for a
South African number where 044 is entered as the area
code. It is NOT acceptable to remove the zero for the
following reason: LAPTOPS may need to dial the
international number from a different location and the
zero may be a necessary input. i.e. a UK laptop user in
South Africa will need to dial a South African number
with the zero in the area code.

If Outlook 2003 can distinguish where it needs to dial
the zero and where it shouldn't, Pocket PC Phone edition
should too, especially since it is supposed to sync with
Outlook seamlessly.

Microsoft, please fix this problem.
