This is a result of Windows XP hotfix KB885250. You can uninstall this
hotfix using add/remove programs (you need 'show updates' checked).
Then to prevent it being re-installed by subsequent updates go to
http://www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com select "custom Install", when it finds
that particular hotfix, tick "hide" so it won't download and install
that hotfix again.

There is an MS article KB 895900 which offers another hotfix to correct
the problem although they advise to wait for the next XP service pack.

A work around in the meantime is when selecting 'save as' in office
programs, first select a folder on the local disk, then change the file
name as desired, then select the folder location on the mapped drive
where you really want to save the do***ent. Amazingly this works !
