Default BSOD followed by OS NOT FOUND

Hey,

I woke up this morning to my old laptop (XP SP2) sporting a friendly
BSOD:

kernel_data_inpage_error in atapi.sys driver.

When I rebooted, I got an equally pleasing "operating system not found"
error.

I know this may mean that my hard drive has died. Luckily, I recently
bought a 2nd laptop and had copied all of my personal files, so I'm not
as stressed out about this as I would've been a month ago.

Could it be that the atapi driver error is what is causing the hard
drive not to be recognized? Isn't atapi a drive controller?

If so, is there a way to fix this driver when you can't even connect to
the hard drive? Then again, my drive isn't even recognized in the BIOS,
so that would be before atapi.sys had even loaded, right?

I very simply in the market for a new hard drive?

Advice appreciated, if you have it.

Thanks.
