I'm sure it's a rookie question....

But all my mail seems to come in with those silly little side arrows on the
left column.

Of course....when you send back and forth, the trail of >>> gets longer and
longer..

Is there a way to stop having those coming through?

That formatting is usually supplied by the sender, but check
Tools>Options>E-mail Options.
