Default Date sorting broken? V4.01

Hi,

I just found this newsgroup and am glad it's here.

After 10 years using Pegasus, I have one nagging problem - the sorting
of messages by date in folders. Here is a sample of one folder showing
sample message dates:

12 Sep 03, 15:40
28 Aug 03, 11:32
...
30 Jul 03, 12:08
...
2 Jun 03, 16:22
...
3 Apr 03, 12:28
29 Jan 03, 8:43
24 Sep 03, 12:04
23 Sep 03, 13:06
22 Sep 03, 15:21
12 Sep 03, 9:13

I can't see a pattern yet, but it's driving me nuts when I try to find
an e-mail and the date sorting is broken like that.

Is this something I can correct, or is this corrected in a newer version?

Thanks,

Bob Halpin

Default Date sorting broken? V4.01

I have not noticed any date-sorting problems in any of the 4.x versions of
Pegasus Mail. However, note that the displayed date (and, therefore, the
sorting of dates) depends on the message "Date:" header being strictly
compliant with RFC 2822, "Internet Message Format." Deviations from the
standard are interpreted poorly in PM. Also note that the main menu setting
"Folder" | "Apply timezone correction" will affect the sort order; if
selected, all dates and times are changed to correspond to your local time
zone before sorting. "Folder" | "Sort unread before read" and "Folder" |
"Sort in reverse order" will also affect the order.

RFC 2822 specifies the required format for the "Date" header:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2822.txt

Messages must conform for PM to sort properly. If you check the "raw view" of
some of the out-of-order messages, you may find that the "Date" headers are
non-compliant.

<snip>

Bingo - it was the sort "Unread before Read". I tend to ignore the read
check mark because I've had some crashes and many items that I have in
fact read are not tagged as such. Ignoring that column prevented me from
seeing the 'pattern'.

Thank's.

Bob
