Default Mailbox Inconsistencies

Dear Pmail users,
Having trouble with one of my mail boxes. It's the one I keep all my
work related mail in and is therefore quite important! Problem is as
follows:

Mailbox reports inconsistencies. I go to reindex the box, it reports that
the reindexing went well! Then it reports more problems when I re check
it. This seems to be an endless loop. Is there anything I can do to
manually save this mailbox from self destructing Basically it seems to
be Ok apart from thee reports of problems.

Yiur wisdom would be appreciated as always.

Thanks,

James.

I would recommend creating a new folder, dragging-and-dropping all of the
messages from the inconsistent folder to the new folder, deleting the old
folder, and renaming the new folder to the old folder name. Note that you
will have to reset any attached identity and mail filtering rules that target
the old folder (rules work with an internal folder ID, not the folder name
that is displayed, and this ID must be reset).

That has worked for me in the past. Yesterday I had the same problem & just
shut PMail down & restarted it & that fixed the problem.

oprweveslybvp3mo@news.opera.com,
James Pirie <ambyman@highlandsof scotland.net>:

This is OK as long as you don't have mail filtering rules, as David pointed
out.

To avoid such complications, two alternatives:

Alternative 1. Create a back-up directory with copies of the uncorrupted
(empty, preferably) mail folder files (in pairs). If corruption occurs, move
all messages to some other temp. folder, close Peg, recover the two files
from backup, move messages back - this has always worked for me. Another
plus - retains all read-unread flags, etc.

Alternative 2 (try if you don't have backups). Close Pegasus, delete the
*.pmi index file (and just this one), restart, reindex folder. Usually
works, but not always. Keeps filters working, but loses read-unread flags,
etc.

Or at least not so many rules referencing the target folder as to make
resetting the rules a lot of work.

"Etc." includes the reappearance of messages deleted since the last successful
folder compression.

Right
But there's one more thing: the filenames will change, too, so if you need
to keep this in sync with some other machine, that will create problems here...

Right again. As well as any hand-edited changes to sender, etc.

Don't you rename all your folder filenames to something sensible? ;-)

Yes, I do
But I like to do it once when I first create them, not every time I get a
folder corruption!

Using one of the two alternative procedures I have described saves me from
repeating this, pleasant as it may be, operation.
