Default spam.pnp update 10/19/03 (for Pegasus Mail users)

In article <4a2bcc9f.0310181743.67b68be0@posting.google.com>,
widdersdotcom@earthlink.net says...

Here we go again...... another day, same old bs. This dumb nuts is
clearly not reading these groups, and the fact he's posting with an invalid
email address... what a dumb ass. This is clearly a "dump and run"
crossposting usenet spammer.

He could be posting with an invalid email address for the same reason many
people do -- he wants to obscure his real address posting on newsgroups so he
doesn't get spammed.

I think his intentions are good, he's just misguided.

In article <so4dpv4rp8rdq8k5i582ioci2r9kt0vqf6@4ax.com>, John Hunter
jhunter@nonken.netsays...

Correct, as do I. However, I do note this in my signature.

He can be as misguided as he wants, the issue is that he is trying to misguide
others. Some will wonder why they don't get email from some trusted contacts,
and it's because they took his list at face value ( thru ignorance ) and
actually used it. In this way he is doing harm.

If you don't have a reason, at least have an excuse.

Just in case there's any doubt, my email address is useless. Please reply to
this newsgroup.

Of course there's a prescribed way of posting with an invalid email
address -- use an email address that has no possibility of being valid
now or in the forseeable future, preferrably with a right-hand side
(domain) that does not and can not exist. The email address that he is
using has a distinct and non-zero (though not quantifiable) probability
of being valid at some time in the future. Moreover, the right-hand
side of the email address that he is using is a valid and presently-
active domain. He's therefore causing the mail servers at
earthlink.net to have to work harder receiving spam destined for the
(presently nonexistent, but not guaranteed to always be so) email
address that he is using to post to UseNet.

IMVHO, doing so is abuse of the net, in and of itself.

Cheers

Some providers reject messages if doing so (I can't, e.g.).

All true. I merely meant that his use of an invalid email address did not in and
of itself mean that he was trying to hide from legitimate traffic. That is, I
don't think it's a reason to question his intent.

I do agree that his methods are questionable.

BTW, why do you have your news poster set up to request an email reply to a
newsgroup post when you're using an invalid email address in the first place?
