Default Moving "My Documents" to another drive.

I'm a new XP user and have my hard disk set up with a 'C' drive for Windows
and 'D' drive for my data. At present there is nothing on the 'D' drive,
while shared and my document folders are on 'C', together with the recycle
bin.

I want to relocate both the document and recycle folders as they are data,
on my 'D' drive, leaving them absent from the 'C' drive.

I'd appreciate knowing whether this is appropriate, and if so the best way
to do it so Windows and anything else doesn't get offended or inconvenienced?
Also if there anything else I should be moving?

Thank's.

Hi

The My Documents folder can easily be moved to d drive. Right click on
My Documents and goto properties, you can see "Target Folder Location".
Simply change this to a folder on your d drive and all documents will
be there. I cant remember whether you have manually move your old
documents over to the new location or not.

The recycled folder takes up a percentage of free space on both drives.
To change the settings right click on Recycle Bin and select
properties. Automatically it will say use one setting for all drives,
if you choose "configure drives independently" then you should have
control over how much free space is used for the recycle bin on each
drive, I would recommend leaving the setting as "Use one setting for
all drives" though.

I cant really think of anything else you "should" be moving, i think
you should just save all data you create now to the d drive.

Hope this helps ...

Download and install TweakUI, part of the Windows XP PowerToys
download at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp
It will add a TweakUI icon to the Control Panel. Launch that and go
to the "My Computer" tab. The Special Folders (lower) section of
the window allows you to change the default location for a number of
system components including My Documents.

Good luck

I've moved My Documents as well. However, some programs still insist on
defaulting to the C:/D&S ... My Documents folder. Often, the Save as
options when downloading or saving a web page or such will also default to
the C:/D&S ... My Documents folder. So I wind up with two, each in a
different location.

I once followed a series of detailed instructions to edit the registry to
thwart such behavior, and had about 85% success. Then a set of updates made
my hard work revert.

I've given up.

In my opinion, First donot change the target file in properties on your
documents
the best thing to do is run your desktop cleanup wizard and put your
documents folder on that list that you dont want on your desktop then
relocate them to d drive when you save them,
this will leave a shortcut on you c drive desktop and place all your
files you want to store on d drive. so that everytime you run your
desktop cleanup wizard all files will auto store to d drive.
this is a feature that xp has and if you utilize it, it can be so much
simpler than individual file saves
also if you want in your systems tools files you can use your file
transfer wizard and transfer them to d drive.

you can also set up tasks to do this once a week , a day , a month,

You may need to change Default File locations in the Microsoft Office
programmes you choose to move the My Documents folder. For Word
go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on
Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General
and change default file path.

Hope this helps.

Hi folks,

Ross, your suggestion seems the simplest, though Im going to look at Ron's
TweakUI features too, Lafaye58's suggestion is an interesting one, though
probably too sophisticated for me at the present, and I'll bear in mind the
considerations re updating the default save destination in applications.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Allotmenteer.
