Sounds like the battery has been damaged.

Assuming that your cradle has an "extra battery slot" would suggest
using that overnight with only the battery inserted for an ac charge and
if the battery is still dead, consider it toast.

Next, do you know if the cigarette lighter is "hot" when the key is
turned off? Many cars provide power to it only when the ignition is on.

And, while it shouldn't happen, it's possible that the battery could
discharge back through the 12v adapter when it was not connected or
shorted by the socket.

Bottom line, this is one of those diagnostics that shouldn't be done
long distance... get the batteries, chargers, adapters, etc to someone
who understands charging circuits, voltages, etc, and have them
determine the current status.
