WM10 enabled portable devices (music or video) pass information to WM10 on
the MCE box that tell it the optimal settings for encoding. Alternatively,
you can also set this up by going (MCE WM10 box) to Tools, Options, Devices,
finding your device, and clicking on Properties.

If the file is part of a sync rule, then WMP will transcode the file in the
background if needed.

For example, if you have created a sync rule that includes the last 3
epsisodes of a given series, and MCE records a new episode, WMP will detect
that a new episode has been added and should be sync'ed during the next
connection.

It queues up the content for transcoding, and the background transcode will
start after 10 minutes of keyboard/mouse idle time. The next time you sync
PMC, WMP will simply copy the transcoded file from the transcode cache.
