Default WMP Star Ratings not copied over to MCX or laptop

Hi, I have Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 on my desktop PC, and also have a
Linksys Media Center Extender (MCX), an Xbox running MCX for Xbox, and a
laptop.

In the MCX devices when I Add Music, all my tracks are added without the
ratings I gave them in WMP on the desktop computer. The same happens if I
sync or copy the tracks to my laptop - all ratings are lost and revert to
3-stars/unrated.

This means auto playlists like '4 or 5 star rated' do not find any tracks in
the MCX devices, or on the laptop.

Rather frustrating after hours of rating all the tracks. Is there any way
to ensure these are in fact copied over to other machines?

Thanks.

I've not tested this, but might it work if you embedded ratings info in
the file? That is one of the options on the library tab of WMP, embed
metadata in the files (it is off by default).

Thanks Peter, that sounded extremely promising, but I have no such option in
WMP10 :-S Is it definitely there?

Definitely in there, but it's called "maintain my star ratings as global
ratings in the media file". I think I read in the mediacenter
newsgroup that this didn't work for you.

Ah, that's a different option to what I first thought you were directing me
to. No, sadly that doesn't carry the ratings across to Extenders or
laptops.

Surely this isn't by design? I should have to re-rate a thousand songs each
time I move them to a different device or want to play them on an Extender?!

My workaround for this daft issue was to drag the contents of my
'Favorites - 4 and 5 star rated' auto-playlist into a new normal Playlist
called 'Favourites'. In future instead of rating music, I will just add my
faves to that playlist. The MCX devices pick it up and play it just fine.

Still ridiculous that ratings are lost on their way from the MCE machine to
the MCX and laptops!
