Ever heard of a "bot" ? Obviously the virus makers know
how to scan for email addresses from the groups, so
MS should be able to scan the groups for certain messages
and remove them

Simple,

Run an anti virus program on the news server to remove messages
that have a virus attached. Most anti-virus programs can scan
entire hard drive for matching binary images. Run it hourly.

Not that simple at all. this stuff doesn't run on your average PC--the
volumes of storage and network throughput are difficult to imagine.

They are working on it, however.

What do you mean "run it hourly".

It is inappropriate, at least in most newsgroups, for an article to
exceed a few hundred lines. This one is over 2000 lines, as noted in
its header.

For newsgroups propagated by the Usenet peering mechanism, it seems
impractical for anyone to preclude injection; but cancel messages can be
generated reasonably effectively.

But any user with decent software can kill articles on message-length,
thus preventing delivery.

-

Bill Sanderson : Some newsreaders do not always show message Subjects
(clearly or at all); so it would help if you could put a recognisable
remark, however small, in the body or as a signature. "Virus warning.
Bill S" would be perfectly adequate.
