Default Upgrade procedure from SMS2 SP5 to SMS 2003

Hi,

I have a SMS 2.0 SP5 server with MS SQL7 installed.
Supported for 700 client. Main function for this SMS
server is user to software distribution.

I plan to upgrade this server to new harware and at the
sametime to upgrade it to SMS 2003.

Where can I find the migration path/procedure information
and do***ention ?

Please advise..

Hi AL,

you cannot upgrade the hardware and install SMS from scratch without loosing
your data.

Depending on your hardware, you can upgrade the current system (e.g. plug
disk drives into new server enclosure) running the same installation.

You don't tell you OS version, So i assumer you have NT 4. first, upgrade
your SQL to sql2000, then upgrade to windows 2003 (or windows 2000) then
upgrade to SMS 2003

If upgrading to new hardware why not do a parallel install.
Move Site boundaries to new server
wait 24/48 hours
switch off old server

Good points:
That way you get a fresh install.
No inline upgrade issues

Bad points:
lose all data.
Recreate all queries
Recreate all packages & adverti*****ts

Hi Joe,

moving site boundaries will not solve your problem. The clients keep the CAP
an will still report to your old server/cap. You have to install the new
server with the same name, sitecode etc. This MAY work, but I've never tried
something like that. If you install that way, you CANNOT operate both
servers simultaneously.

Yes, the idea is will get rid of the SMS 2 once
successfully move to SM 2003 with new H/W.

What I'm concern now is on the client. How would they get
upgrade to SMS 2003 client ??

if you upgrade your site, the clents still can contact the CAP and retrieve
site wide client configuration settings. The check every 23hrs the
configuration an if comparision show modified site setting the client will
update itself with new files. This results in getting "legacy" client
version 2.5 und your SMS 2003 client systems. If you plan to migrate to
advanced client, you can deploy this client like any other package or
distrubute it on each client withnin all systems collection via right-click
dialog options.
