All the communications are made from the client. Because on the GPO that
are applied, its set that the update server is you WSUS server. So whenever the clients needs to download the updates, it tries to contact your server to do that... according to what options you configure on your WSUS (any approved or declined updates), downloads and/or installs those updates (also this is set by a GPO). The first communications are made to report the WSUS server about the status of the client (OS, updates applied, etc).
