Default WSUS 3.0 Client Communication

I want to put the WSUS 3.0 behind a stateful firewall, so I want to know if
the WSUS server initiates any communication to the client, or does all
communication with the WSUS server get initiated from the client? Thanks

All the communications are made from the client. Because on the GPO that
are applied, its set that the update server is you WSUS server. So whenever
the clients needs to download the updates, it tries to contact your server
to do that... according to what options you configure on your WSUS (any
approved or declined updates), downloads and/or installs those updates (also
this is set by a GPO).

The first communications are made to report the WSUS server about the
status of the client (OS, updates applied, etc).

Cheers!
