Default Server does not exist or access denied

We are running into a strange problem here. We have a web application running
under .NET 1.1 that connects to various SQL Server instances identified
through a series of System ODBC DSNs set up on the web server.

If the SQL Server is running on a regular standalone server, we can connect
without a problem; however, if the SQL Server instance is running on a
virtual server (using VMWare), the following error is returned:

SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

We checked that a connection can be made from an outside application to all
SQL Server instances and the user name and passwords are valid. As this
problem appears to be happening only when using running under a web
application, it appears it may have something to do with the security context
of the web user - we tried using various accounts to no avail.

Is there anything different that one has to use in a connection string in
order to connect to a SQL Server running in a virtual server environment?

If anyone has any ideas, it would be mch appreciated.

An obvious question, but did you try to connect to the SQL instance from the
web server machine using osql.exe with the same ODBC DSN name? Also try it
with a SQL Server login.

Yes. We tried that and it all works from other applications.

Default server does not exist or access denied

hi,

I can't connect to a server that's running on my machine. I can't even
connect to it through Enterprise Manager. Im in big trouble. Can somebody
help?
I think this is happening because I had granted access to another database
for a new login/pwd. Now I can't even get my server registered - it tells
me it's not there. but it's in the drop-down list. I've spent about a day on
this and I keep making things worse. Maybe somebody out there has a solution?
Other than reinstalling Sql Server......???

thanks-

Hi,
Thanks for your post.

From your description, I understand that:
You couldn't access your SQL Server. Before this failure, you granted
access permission to another database with a new login/password. And you
were also unable to register the server.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.

To narrow down this issue, I appreciate to know:
1. What's your SQL Server edition?
2. What's your SQL Server authentication mode? Windows Authentication or
Mixed mode?
3. Could you ping the SQL Server machine successfully?
4. Could you tell me more about your database environment and the operation
on assigning new
SQL login account to another database? Generally, adding a new login
account won't affect others.

For now, I recommend you that :
1. Check server network utility to make sure named pipes/tcpip is enabled.
2. Check client network utility on the client to make sure the alias of the
server is in the list. If not, you can add it.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know. It's my
pleasure to be of assistance.
