I have several installations of 2003 Server running TS. On a couple of them,
i receive a grey screen after logging in. Making the user a member of the
administrator group allows them to log in normally.
All TS users have already been added to the Remote Desktop Users group, so I
know thats not the problem. The problem is occuring on several machines, DC’s
and standalone servers.
Any ideas how i can get these users out of the administrator group and

Anything in the EventLog, especially the security log?
I believe that this can happen when users have too few permissions on
the root of the filesystem.
What kind of profiles do the users have? Have you checked
thepermissions on their roaming profiles and on \Documents and
Settings folder on each TS?
If this doesn’t help, I would download FileMon and RegMon from
http://www.sysinternals.com/. Run them as administrator (when no user
is connected), and start a TS session as a normal user.
FileMon and RegMon will show you all “access denied” errors that
occur, so that you can give your users the necessary permissions on a
file-to file or Registry subkey basis.

In the security log, there were 12 succesfull audit events related to the
login. I looked them up on eventid.net and they all look normal, except there
is a event 538, a logoff audit, even though the client is still at the grey
For permission testing purposes, i have added the everyone group to the root
and given full control, and propogated to all child nodes, no luck.
All profiles are local, i even deleted a profile to let it be recreated, no
I have tried filemon and regmon, but cannot find anything relavent. I have
also added everyone full control to the registry for testing.

Is this consistent on a per user basis? That is, do the users see it 100%
of the time (on all or some servers). Or are different users seeing it
