Is there a special SRV record type? Does a client know to use any DC?

You need to have the servers in DNS as A record. Regular host. Also you need:
1. Separate site in sites and services for the additional DFS servers if
outside the Default-First-Site
1. Separate subnets bound to the site created in previous step. Again, the
subnet is only needed if you have DFS servers on another subnet and another
Once you do this, you will see the Sites change in the DFS console. Let us
know if this worked for you.

Once you create the sites and move the server to another site (in AD Sites)
then you will notice the a change in the DFS console. You will see the Site
from AD apear in the DFS console. You will have 2 folders in DFS (for
example) and one will show folder1 on server1 in site Default and second (the
target) will show folder2 server2 in site WHATEVERYOUNAMEDIT. This is the
sign you got it setup correctly and DFS is reading from AD.
