Nothing that I do seems to work. I am able to use this device as intended on
a laptop XP Home and a desktop XP Pro. If I can’t find another way, the only
other thing I know to do is a fresh install of XPMCE.

i’m having the exact same problem with an older gateway mp3 player, except
that my situation was caused by unplugging the device without first selecting
‘safely remove hardware.’
this happened before, and i don’t know what i did in the registry, but i got
it to work. just the other day the power plug got disconnected and the usb
connection reset, leading to the same problem again… now i can’t remember
what i did that first time.
i’m sure reinstalling windows will solve the problem, but i’d rather not go
through the process. it’s only been a few months since my last reinstall.
btw, the Vid_0000&Pid_0000 entry is the one that is created when you plug
your player in.
