I need to reinstall. I want to completely format the hard drive. But when i
put the disk in and it finally tells me theres a more current version of
windows installed. What do I do to install it?

Google on how to wipe your hard drive completely clean and start from
scratch.

Post slightly confusing. You mention wanting to format the hard drive but
evidently you were using the XP CD.
Usually the message "more current version " is the result of XP with service
pack 2 being on the computer and you are using an older XP CD - SP2 makes
the XP installed a "newer" version.
You can create a "slipstream" XP CD, get a XP SP2 CD or check control panel
for the option of uninstalling SP2.

since you plan on loosing everything anyway...

during the XP cd boot, chose the option to NOT recover. On the screen
to select which partition to install onto, DELETE the partition.

Reboot (safety net!

restart the install process, and you shouldn't have that annoying message.

The idea to create a slipstreamed CD is VERY VERY VERY beneficial.
Please consider that.
