Default Web connectivity problem

The very same problem has happened to me. As far as I can make out the
problem is with the updating from version 6 to version 7 of IE. After
searching the net for an answer (on a friend's laptop) I found that the
problem is widespread and everyone seems to have updated IE like myself. I
have tried using Firefox(again downloading from my friend's laptop) but this
is showing the same symptoms albeit with a slightly different error message,
"The proxy server is refusing connections". "Firefox is configured to use a
proxy server that is refusing connections. "
This problem is totally foxing me as I am able to use IE via my
Kaspersky anti-virus programme as I have sent them messages thinking it
might be a virus problem. The one thing I noticed was that their address
starts with https, is this of any significance? Looking through the settings
in Internet Options, under Proxy settings, there is a list of address's
which do not require a proxy server, again this may be significant or I am I
way off the mark.
Help needed from a techie.
