Default Only DC crashed, best way to restore

The DC on my network is being rebuilt. What is the best way to recover
Active Directory?
Just dcpromo the original DC, remove workstations from domain and add back
to domain once it's been setup again?

Hello ShrikeAttack,

Sorry but you are a bit unclear. Is the DC crashed and you have a backup
for restore or did you install a new machine as DC?

Best regards

There is no backup. I'm in the process of rebuilding the OS for the server
that was acting as the Domain controller that hosted AD.

Hello ShrikeAttack,

Then you have to add the workstations again to the new domain and also have
to recreate all useraccounts, policies etc.

I have many workstations but few users and policies. I'm concerned how I
should add the workstations back to the domain. In other words, does it
matter if the workstations have been removed from the non-existing domain
before or after the new domain (new domain name is same as non-existing
domain) is established? Hope this makes since.

Hello ShrikeAttack,

To add them to the new domain it is better, to bring them to workgroup and
then add it to domain. It maybe works directly but to prevent errors and
problems i would do it this way.

Best regards

I've got a couple of other non-dc servers on this network. I don't suppose
this offers me any options as far a promoting one to DC...

Hello ShrikeAttack,

Ofcourse you can promote another member to dc and you should really do it
to have redundancy and that also prevents you from starting at the beginning,
but this will NOT help you now to recreate everything.

You have to start from scratch. All objects and everything pertaining to
the domain are gone. I would recommend two changes. Start taking regular
backups and add a second dc to your domain.
