I'm a developer running Win2K Server. When I first bring up Windows
Explorer, after a few minutes it terminates and restarts itself (task bar goes away and then reappears, and Windows Explorer closes). When I reopen a Windows Explorer window, after a few more minutes it terminates saying 'the memory at address ... cannot be read'. It takes several attempts to close the "cannot read from address ..." box, then an error dialog box appears with "Run-time error '52': Bad file name or number". Then the task bar disappears and my machine locks up. This started happening after I installed drivers for my Vivitar Vivicam 3610 digital camera. Then I found out that for Win2K I was not supposed to install them (Plug and Play was supposed to handle everything). However, I tried deinstalling the drivers without success. I still get the message at startup: "At least one service was unable to start." When I check the Event Viewer, the error logged is "Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7000 Date: 10/19/2004 Time: 10:12:00 AM User: N/A Computer: MIKE Description: The Digital Camera - PC Camera service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified." When I look in the Services control menu there is no such service listed. Any ideas for recovery? Might I simply use the emergency repair process, pick manual repair and just restore my startup environment, followed by reapplying the latest Service pack? Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated. I'm at triunity@nospam.nospam. |
