I did a fresh install of Windows 2000 Prof. I had an SMC NIC in the system,
which was I configured to my TCP/IP and DNS settings. I then updated Windows.
After completeing the updates, I discovered that I've lost the network icon,
and am unable to change my TCP/IP settings. The card is working fine. That's
the reason I've been able to connect to the Internet, but I just cannot get
to see the network connection in the Network & Dial-up Connection box. I can
see the card in Hardware. I've booted down the system, removed the card,
booted up the system, put in a new card, and re-booted the system, but am
still unable to get the icon. Can anyone help me please. Would really
appreciate it. Thank you.

whats in a name?

Can you access the control panel? If you open "network", right-click on
your connection and choose "properties", there is a box at the bottom
"show icon in taskbar"

Hi Rajiv

If the network icon of the network is missing while viewing properties of
network neighbour then you need to change the properties of Distributed COM
configuration properties. ie. DOMCNFG, make sure that you are well verse in
changing the properties of the dcomcnfg.

On the Default Properties tab, Click connect in the Default Authentication
Level and click any setting other than Anonymous in the Default
Impersonation Level box. The default setting is Identify.

This should solve your problem but still the problem is not solved then
register netshell.dll, netcfgx.dll and netman.dll
