Default Microsoft DFS question

I have set up DFS on our network and things seem to be working great. It
seems that users who try to access old desktop shortcuts are still able to do
so pointing to the old network drives. Not only are they able to open them
up, but the old drives are getting re-mapped to their computers. Basically,
I would like to know if there is a way of restricting this from happening in
policy or DFS root or anywhere i guess. Any help is appreciated.
