Default I/O error - remote drive

Hi,

I have an IBM laptop running WIN 2000 and an external Hard
drive (Maxtor) which I use as a backup system. I don't
keep the backup drive constantly plugged in to the USB. I
only plug it in when i use it to back up files now and
then. Recently I tried booting up the hard drive and my OS
explorer window would hang and take a long time to
refresh. I tried viewing through DOS and after a long time
it reports there's an I/O error.

I tried to reformat the external hard drive but it also
hung after about a 60% reformat proceedure.

If anyone has any ideas walks going on please let me know.

Thanks,
CC
