I was setting up a VPN a few days ago and could not get it to work. I
compared all the router settings to a known good connection and they appeared
to be the same and spent hours trying to get it to work.

The trap was I didnt compare carefully enough. On the non working system I
had only opened port 1723 for TCP and not UDP. The moment I opened it for
both it was successfull.

I guess i am saying make sure you check all your settings carefully or you
will spend many wasted hours like I did

This will be news for all the people who have PPTP links working with
UDP blocked. I can't think of any reason why this solved your problem. PPTP
links don't use UDP. L2tp uses UDP, but not port 1723.
