Hi KS,
I don't know if you've tried this or not, before starting Defrag: 1) Re-boot your computer 2) Turn off any screensavers you may be running 3) Clean out all Temporary Internet files (and Offline Content) 4) Delete Cookies if you wish 5) Empty the Recycle Bin 6) Delete the contents of the Applog folder (contents only, not the folder) 7) Delete files in the C:\Windows\Temp folder (just the contents, not the folder) 8) Do not attempt to Defrag while online. If you have a broadband connection, physically disconnect your hook-up until Defrag is completed. 9) Do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the "End Task" dialog box. You should always run Scandisk before a Defrag, (unless you're actually

Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver-- None) 2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management-- Always On,Never,Never,Never) 3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps. 4. Suspend Task Scheduler 5. Turn off interfering programs. Use "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2" from PCMag (below). Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". Note what is unchecked. Then, go to the General tab & disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot. Don't forget to re-enable before the next boot. 6. Use "HDValet" from PCMag, or (a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete all offline content, OK, OK" (b) "START, Run, %TEMP%", & delete all files that will let you. This will likely be "C:\Windows\Temp". This is best done after a fresh boot, unless you have not seen the message "Reboot to complete this install". 7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all three items under "Scandisk, Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If you want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.) 8. "START, Run, Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the unmovables. The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them; but DEFINITELY turn off the Virus Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and certainly after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when this says so: http://www.pcmag.com/ 's CrackUp, by Gregory A. Wolking & Bob Flanders. Also, take DiskAction, to determine what is constantly writing to the HDD, which causes the restarts. Take BHOCop & StartupCop too. "DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes that access any partition. It discovered the MS Critical Update Notification Tool was accessing my HDD every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally, "START, Windows Update" on your own. "BHOCop" found a Browser Helper Object called Wavehelper Class, created by "Wavetop", that was building a monstrosity of an error log called "Logit.txt" in here. "START, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one? Now, my hard drive is quieter than my mouse. This is not a common error. In essence I think you need to eliminate all potential causes of error. Update your anti-virus definitions and run as full anti-virus scan. Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites. You need to get scandisk to work to have any chance with Disk Defragmenter. When scandisk seems to stall it often means it has encountered a bad cluster ( bad sector ) on the hard disk. This it will try to repair and the process can take quite a time to complete. If this is what is happening then the only way forward is to be extremely patient. You may find it prudent to back up your more important data. I suggest that you remove Temporary Internet Files ( including Offline Content ) and History. Start Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, General, Temporary Internet Files, Delete Files, check Offline Content and click on OK. Also empty your Recycle Bin. This helps remove a potential problem when running Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter. Another precaution. Delete the contents of the applog folder ( the content not the folder! ). See link below (disregard the references to the error messages ) for the procedure. Defrag Error Message: ID No EFRAG00205 (Q238165)http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q238165 I would then run a "thorough" Scandisk again in Safe Mode. For Options see that System & Data areas is selected. Then click on Advanced and see that you have selected: 1. Display Summary -Always. 2. Log file -Append to Log 3. Check files for -Check all three options. 4. Report Ms-Dos Mode name length errors There is an option to Automatically fix errors which I would check but many computer buffs do not preferring to investigate the error using the log before attempting to fix the problem. When you have successfully run Scandisk run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode. To start Windows in safe mode Click Start, and then click Shut down. Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu appears. For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu. Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER. Notes In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices. -- ~~~~~~ Hope this helps.
