I would like to acquire as many as 10 or more Microsoft 98 Second Edition
full and legal edition retail cds with product keys. How can I legally meet
this demand to help clients dual boot with 98 Second Edition and XP
Professional?

I've never understood why anyone would need dual booting capability, but I
guess there are some who feel that they need to hang onto the old a while
longer when they go to the new. I've upgraded at least 20 PCs (to XP Home
Edition and XP Pro) for myself, relatives, and friends and never have had a
need to keep W98 yet.

Anyway, the most likely source for W98SE is EBay.

Dual boots' good for at least the following reason. Some clients of mine
want to move 'forward' and "upgrade," to the newest Windows platform without
"being thrown in at the deep end," by losing their current Windows, apps.
and setup installation in "one fell swoop," and also do not want to take the
slightest risk with their current W98 /apps. installation by upgrading it.
Upgrading a current W98/se installation is not an attractive proposition to
many people, i.e. they don't want to take the slightest chance of upsetting
what they've got, and would prefer to prepare to upgrade in a gradual
fashion.

When I give them the option of installing XP onto a different drive, and
explain that their W98 platform will be untouched, bar a DOS dual-boot
screen at startup, and that they'll be able to install their apps. onto XP
as and when they've got the time, and that OE can be tweaked to use a common
message store, and that when they're happy with XP and perhaps comes a time
when they find that they're never using W98 anymore they can switch off the
dual boot screen etc.....that's the one they want :-)

Hi:

I completely understand. Unfortunately, many of my friends and relatives who
want me to upgrade their computers to XP have such messed up systems that
only a clean install will do. The registry is usually flawed, there are
almost always viruses and spyware present, and hardly any files are put into
meaningfully-named folders. To add even more grief, rarely have any
important files been backed up. So I usually am forced to do a clean install
of the operating system (including removing all partitions, creating a fresh
partition, and reformatting), download/install AV and antispyware software,
and give them a briefing on how to use them - which is soon forgotten. For
example, I recently cleaned up my daughters computer. In the process I found
out that she had not run the AV or antispyware software since last January,
even though she had been briefed to run them frequently and to keep them
updated. Sigh!

Then I have to wonder how your customers manage to cope with the added
complexity of a dual OS. Hopefully they are not as inept as some of my
acquaintenances.

Your're completley right of course, I'd briefly overlooked that side of
things when I blurted out my post ! :-) , and I temporarily forgot those
lovely machines where several years worth of magazine demo cd's have been
shoved in, programs have been ripped out without at least trying the
"uninstall" for them, and then there must have been an auto or custom
install of Norton where the installee obviously have felt obliged to say yes
to everything, including a secondary recycle bin which didn't help things
very much either ! :-)

Wyh si ti tahtt no a compure keybaord, "your" always comes out as "you"
,(even though there is not a weak 'r' pm yjr lrunpstf ...oops, i moved to
the left a little, ...even though there is not a weak or faulty 'r' on the
keyboard and why it it that some words come out the wrong way around, and
other letters are often completely missing ?
Somebody once suggested to me that it's because I'm not hitting the keys
in the correct order but, I didn't believe them one little bit ! I suspect
that there arre hidden routines in Windows 98 that monitors ones typing
ability and should ones' typing improve slightly, over a period of days or
weeks, it starts doing those "missing letters" and "jumbled and/or missing
letters" routines on purpose, just to be nasty. :-) <vbg+smugness>

There isn't any program doing it. It's a creature in there that gobbles
letters, sometimes regurgitating them elsewhere! Even whole words! I SAW
IT ONCE, a little, purple thing, big, big teeth! Don't try to grab at
it!

www.pricewatch.com is a good place to start. Many companies sell
a license pack alone, or a license with CD media. You only need one
media. I don't know if all companies sell legal versions.
