Something odd, though. I proceeded unsuccessfully until I got to step 5. I
renamed autoexec.bat and config.sys and Windows shut down normally. I then
rebooted and changed the names back. I shut down again, normally. I tried
starting up, running programs and shutting down - the problem appears to
be gone, but I have no idea what I did. I never got to the "step-by-step
confirmation" boot. Evidently something changed when I started up without
the original autoexec.bat and config.sys, and the change remained in
effect.
