Default copying hard drive

I want to copy the contents of my old hard drive on to my newly
installed larger hard drive. Tell me whether I'm going to do this
correctly:

1. Make my new hard drive master and old hard drive slave

2. Go to old hard drive "My Computer" and highlight ("select all") all
the files and folders (except for Windows folder). But when I do
that, it asks me if I want to include hidden files...should I do that?

3. Paste all of that to the new hard drive

4. Re-install my programs

Do I need to uninstall my programs from the old drive first? Do I first
need to delete the folders that were created as part of the original
installation of my programs?

Thanks for the help!

/Carl

Try visitinbg the web site of the drive manufacturer. They have utilities
which will guide you through this.

Your old drive C: is now D: Because it is a Primary
DOS partition the OS reads it before the Ext. partitions
on any hard drive.

This makes no sense. If you are going to reinstal
your programmes (recommended) what is the point
of copying their folders?

No and no.

There should be a hard drive utility with your new drive that will allow
you to copy your old drive to your new one. If not, you should be able
to download that utility from your hard drive manufacturer's site. It is
possible (but not recommended) to copy everything from one drive to the
other using Windows Explorer, but you would have to leave the old drive
as master, make sure the new drive is formatted. Then copy all your root
drive files and folders to the new drive EXCEPT the Windows folder. Then
create a new folder called Windows on the new drive and copy all the
files and folders from the old drive's Windows folder EXCEPT Win386.swp.
Make sure Explorer is set to show all files and folders so as to include
hidden and system files. I'd recommend doing this in safe mode to avoid
having anything running in the background. Then take out the old drive,
set the new one as master. If it won't boot, then you may have to use
FDISK (from your startup disk) to set the new drive as the "active
partition". The disk utility is a lot easier.... :-)

Hehe, well in that case, scratch everything I said in the other post! I
didn't see this one! If you're changing operating systems, the best you
can do is install the new apps on the new drive and then copy whatever
compatible data you can from the old drive for use with your new
applications. In that case you *would* make the old drive the slave. You
can also import your address book, favorites, and stuff like that.
