How does one delete items from the system tray in 98. I'm
not looking to hide them, I want to take them out
permanently. Any help on this subject would be most
appreciated.

Use MSCONFIG on the Startup tab to keep them from loading at startup.

Alternately, here is a list of all the locations from which Windows can load
items at startup:

Note that some of the programs may have their own internal controls for
whether they appear in the system tray, or whether they load at startup
(these are separate questions). I'd use their built-in controls first.

As well as what Jim mentioned, check the programs that the icons
in the systray belong. Sometimes you can completely disable the
icon from within the program.
