I am trying to asist a friend on extracting a missing
ddemll file for her Compaq Pressario on Win98 platform.
At startup, her pc loads Windows and kicks out an error
msg of "Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall
Windows". I attempted to extract the missing file from C
prompt but got a "no matching file in cab.31 win98". Is
is best to re-install Win98 at this point, or does a
workaround exist? Note: her daughter was playing on the
pc prior and I believe she may have deleted important dll
files.

Extract the file to a floppy on the computer you are using now.
Then copy it to the problem computer. Also, make sure there
is no "c:\explorer.exe" file. If this can't be done, try using the
following command line to extract the file. You may have to
change the drive letters to the ones used on the problem
computer.

extract /a /y /L c:\windows e:\win98\base4.cab explorer.exe

Try this command line instead.

extract /a /y /L c:\windows\system e:\win98\base4.cab DDEML.DLL
