Default Modem Driver for Compaq Presario 1660

My client bought one of these laptops second-hand, without any driver or
configuration CD. The machine has a modem socket, so I assume that there is
an internal modem. However, I am unable to get Windows 98 SE to recognise
the modem. The Compaq driver site makes a small number of drivers available;
the modem driver is not among them. The site www.driverguide.com is equally
silent on the subject.

Does anyone know where I can find a modem driver for this baby?

A modem "socket" without a modem adapter = no modem. Have you checked the Compaq
support site for the manual/specs on the machine to find out what, if any, modem it
has?

Thanks for your reply.

I did check various data sheets for this model. Some do
mention a modem for the Presario 1660. None say that
it's an optional feature, so I assume that all have one.
However, profiling tools such as Aida32 do not report
a modem. I don't really want to open the case to see
if the socket is connected to something . . .

Run MSINFO32

Expand the Components tree and click on Modem

It should also be listed in Device Manager

The closest I come with a search on their site, which by the way is like pulling
teeth, is a Lucent Technology modem being used, no guarantees. I find no mention of a
modem yet many mentions of wireless connection. Perhaps a good search by yourself at
their support site in either the Basic Modem Troubleshooting or Advanced may give
some clue and help out.

msinfo32.exe tells me that there is no modem. It now seems
that this laptop has an empty modem socket. Thanks for
your reply.

Does Device Manager list any unknown or problem devices?
