Default Standard mode : Fault outside of MS-DOS extender ahhh!

ok I am getting this error now trying to install windows
98 on my machine with a clean install. This is the first
time this has done it and I dont know what to do. I saw
the article in the knowledge base about this but not sure
what the exact problem is. I'm thinking its either the
windows cd or my hard drive but not sure which. This is
the error codes I get.

Standard mode: fault outside of ms-dos extender.
EC=0000 CS=0397 IP=74D0 AX=0000 BX=040F CX=FFFF DX=040F
SI=C573 DI=A930 BP=01C8 DS=0000 ES=0407 SS=027F SP=01AC

anyone able to determine my exact problem? Does
formatting the hard drive alot cause hard disk corruption
and failures? because i've had to do it alot and not sure
if that caused this. If you could i'd appreiate it if
you could email me a responce because i'll get it faster
and check it more frequently. Thanks alot for your time.
