Default Windows 98SE and ATI Radeon 9800 Drivers

Hello,
I read the product specs at the ATI website for their Radeon 9800 products.
They only mention Windows ME, 2000, and XP. Does ATI still write their
latest drivers which also work in 98SE?

Thanks,
Daniel.

http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

If you follow the links for the graphics drivers only, you'll see that the
same set is for both Win98 and ME.

Whether the rest of the features work in 98/98SE is questionable. I suspect
that many of the features described in
http://www.ati.com/products/radeon98...pro/specs.html *may* work
in 98/98SE, or may not...but either way, they simply aren't "supported".

I certainly wouldn't gamble the price of a 9600 card on a 98/98SE system,
especially since the hardware you have it installed on is not likely to be
fully up to 9600 specs, either. Go with an older card, or upgrade your
entire system. You're trying to bridge too wide a generation gap.

I contacted ATI about this issue. All they did was send me an automated
message. Not a very good impression of their tech support.

Although I assembled my system in Nov 2001, my system is still fairly
robust. While the AGP slot is a 4x, I have a 1400 MHz Athlon, 1 GB PC2100
RAM, and 250 GB's drive space.

Daniel.

No. Registration is simply not required for Windows 98, and has absolutely
no effect on whatever support options remain. At one time, it might have
helped with certain support issues, and to have you on file as the
legitimate owner, in case you needed a replacement CD, or to gain certain
rebate or similar, marketing-oriented benefits. None of those issues apply
today.

Huh? Is this the reason you should not be pulling all nighters?

ROFL!!!

"anon anon" used "Reply All", or the equivalent. I saw the emails before the
posts--and then, when I saw the posts, I simply copy/pasted the answers--and
either got this one wrong or failed to get a good Copy to clipboard and
pasted the same thing twice. The below is a reply to OP's other thread.

The only reason I was up was to get as much of a rush print job done as I
could--but this printer makes so much noise it's hard to think.

I can't tell you any more than that the basic drivers packages are
identical--whether the 9600 will actually function under Win98? I can't
imagine that it wouldn't--it just won't enjoy full function of all features.

Not sure what you're asking here.

If 4x is the max on the AGP, most likely the 9800 series will not work as it
requires an 8x AGP. I do see the 9600 series as Gary mentions will support
4x/8x.

Whoa! You're right! I should watch out for the all-nighters. Slipping from
9800 to 9600 Series...

What I said was meant to apply to the 9800 Series, and the hardware specs
are much more likely to be the killer aspect than the drivers & other
support software.

Actually you doubled up on it. You mention 9600 and give a link for the 9800.
Good cover. <BSEG>
