Default Cannot open User Accounts in Control Panel

I get the following error message:

An exception occurred while trying to run
“C:WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
“C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusrmgr.cpl”,UserAccounts ”

I tried to follow the following instruction which I found online @

The file needed to open the User Accounts applet is nusrmgr.cpl located in
the Windows\System32 folder.

It may have gotten corrupted or misplaced or wandered off but you can
extract a new one.

1. Go to Start>Run, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK.
2. On the General tab, click the "Expand File" button.
3. The "File to restore" is nusrmgr.cpl
4. "Restore From" either your Windows XP CD or the I386 folder on the
harddrive (if it's there); either type in the path or use the "Browse To..."
button
5. "Save file in" C:\Windows\System32 - either type in the path or use the
"Browse To..." button
6. Click the expand button

See if the User Accounts applet will then open."

I still was unable to find the nusrmgr.cpl file either in a backup or in my
Windows XP Pro CD.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Mary

This is because the file is compressed, like most files in the
i386 folder of the WinXP CD. Have a look for nusr*.*, then
expand it with expand.exe.

Dear Pegasus,

Thank you for your help.

I explored my Windows XP Pro CD as you suggested (looking for nusr*.*) and
found D:\I386\nusrmgr.cp_

Can you be more specific in telling me how to use expand.exe on the above
file.

What I tried was using Run/msconfig and then chose the Expand File button.
- Under file to restore I typed nsmgr.cpl
- Under Restore from I browsed to: D:\I386\nusrmgr.cp_
- Under Save File In I put C:\Windows\system32
- Then I clicked Expand

When it finished whirring it said I had to restart for changes to take
effect but when it restarted and I went to Control Panel User groups nothing
had changed.

Thanks.

Mary

- Start a Command Prompt.
- Type this command:
expand f:\I386\nusrmgr.cp_ c:\nusrmgr.cpl{Enter}
- Check if the file now exists in c:\.
- Move it to the System32 folder.

Keep in mind that your problem is likely to be caused
by something other than a "missing" file. I suspect that
it was there all along.

Dear Pegasus,

Thank you so much. It worked like a charm and now I can get into my User
accounts. While the file was there, it must have been damaged in some way.
Now it is fixed.

Thanks again.
