slow response

we are running windows home xp when cicking on add or remove programes it
either is extremely slow or dosen't work at all,all other sections on the
control panel work fine!also when closing down it gets to "windows closing
down" and then freezes,we are having to turm off on the tower,can anybody
help please

You'd be much more likely to get a good answer for this if you posted
