Default How to access the msi database after installation

I understand that when Installer runs it does not automatically cache a
copy of the msi to the end user's system. Yet when a patch is applied to
many times the original msi is needed.
What is the best method to employ so that my future installations will
cache the origiinal msi database.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

make a local copy, and start the setup from there! :-)

Thanks for the info.

Does installer have any built in functions that makes it easy to make that
local copy?

Installed MSI files have a sourcelist that consists at first of the location
that it was installed from. That's where it tries to get it from. Because of
network installs, servers that change names etc, you can modify this, and
yes there are APIs. You can put the MSI file somewhere else then modify that
sourcelist.
This makes use of it:

There's the MsiSourceListAddSource API, and if you know in advance where the
cached copy will be, there's the SOURCELIST property.

Does this mean the entire installation must be compressed within a
setup.exe, for example?
What about installation projects where the components are within a cab, and
a separate MSI file exists? When accessing the source does Windows
Installer truly require the MSI database and the files (I assume so...but I
thought I'd ask)?
