MSI errors when starting apps on client after migration of server to SBS2003
Prior to last weekend my small business had a Windows NT 4.0 Server and a
few clients running Windows 2000. Over the weekend we migrated to a new
server running SBS2003. We followed the procedure in "Migrating from Small
Business Server 4.5 or Windows NT Server 4.0" and all largely went well.
Now we have come across a problem on one of the clients. Some applications
generate MSI error dialogs on startup, from a seemingly unrelated program.
For several applications, when you launch them a "Preparing to install"
dialog appears, then one that says "The feature you are trying to use is on
a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an
alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "AppCAD.msi"
in the box below." The AppCAD application mentioned in the dialog is not the
one being started - it is completely unrelated. If you hit cancel a few
times the application does eventually work.
I am seeing this for several applications including custom VB apps,
QuickBooks, and Excel (when starting the Text File import filter). The
dialog always refers to AppCAD.msi.
AppCAD is a trivial engineering utility program (from
Hewlett-Packard/Agilent). I could happily do without it. However,
uninstalling AppCAD, reinstalling, uninstalling, etc. has no effect. The
errors always appear whether it is installed or uninstalled.
In the Application event log I see this event (several times) each time one
of the problematic apps is launched: Source MsiInstaller, EventID 1001,
"Detection of product '{B4E48967-9556-11D5-9B2F-0060B0F769F5}', feature
'ScannedProject' failed during request for component
'{E89A98DD-023B-11D2-B146-00C04F990B2B}'"
This only happens when logged in as a user. When logged in as the domain
administrator no errors occur. I have tried adding the user to the local
Administrators group on that machine, with no improvement. I have not tried
(and don't particularly want to) adding the user to the Domain Admins group.
I would be grateful for any help.
