Default DNS zone transfer

I'm in the process of taking an NT4 primary DNS and
removing it. I want to take the secondary DNS win2k box
and make it primary and later create a secondary win2k.
Here's my initial plan:

Dump the secondary zone from the win2k box. Create a new
primary zone.no records. Next, configure the NT4 primary
to allow zone transfers, but only to the secondary win2k
box. Transfer the zone to the win2k secondary then update
the DHCP scope to reflect the changes. Disable the DNS
service on the primary NT4 box.

Questions are as follows:

Just exactly how do you "dump the secondary zone?
Wouldn't I have two primaries temporarily and if so, would
a transfer take place to the new zone with no records?

Just convert the secondary on the Win2k to a primary, then change the NT4 to
a Secondary, getting its data from the Win2k. Then just change the SOA
record to reflect the name of the Win2k as the primary name server and allow
zone transfers to the NT4 DNS.

BTW, this will stop the 733 events you posted in your other thread.

You are correct. An additional problem that I didn't
mention is when I do a NSLOOKUP, I get "unknown
servername" and feel that if I start from scratch, I'll
have fresh SOA, NS, etc records.

I'm wondering if I stop the DNS service on primary and
dump the secondary and make it a fresh primary (and later
build a win2k secondary)if that will be prudent. Trouble
is how do I "dump the secondary?" Uninstall DNS and
reinstall? Can I just delete the zone? Will it re-create
itself or do I need to add the records manually?

Delete the zone from the DNS console, then go to %windir%\system32\dns and
"dns\backup dirs to delete the zonename.dns file.

Uninstall DNS and

Just follow my directions in my first reply you'll get it right.

You don't.

Yup. Leave the W2K system as secondary, force a zone transfer (or
wait until one occurs) then shut down the primary and change the
secondary to a primary.
