Default Random web and nslookup outages on lan

Hiya, I have a problem. We have a lan with mixed win machines- 98, 2000 and
XP. DNS is all external from our ISP. WINS is used for local resolution.
Randomly, some machines lose the ability to web browse. At the same time,
nslookup fails (name servers cannot be found.) Other machines are unaffected
at the same time.
After a random period of time, they regain the ability. I'm stumped as to
why.
The machines in question can still resolve names internally (using WINS) and
ping each other and the gateway.
I can see an entry for the relevant machines in DHCP and WINS. DHCP did show
a number of 'bad_address' records, but I've removed those.
Its a strange one, anyone have any ideas as to whats happening?

Gary
