Default logon

I'm switching my nt4 network from token to ethernet. I'm using a windows
2003 standard server as the router. Thus far, i'm able to ping and route
from token to ethernet. I'm able to use resources by mapping i.p. address
on token and ethernet, and use the internet on the ethernet. What i'm not
able to do is to get the domain to validate logon. I'm using a win98 client
and I've set the settings under client logon microsoft networks to logon
domain. I understand that win98 clients can't actually logon to a domain,
but on the token side the win98 clients get a message that they have been
logged on. This is what i'm trying to get on the ethernet side. Since I
know that the ip traffic is being routed correctly and can see the lan and
map resources and use them, I'm confused why I can't get logon validation.
I'm running a wins server on the token side and the ethernet client sees the
wins server when i use ipconfig. Can anyone help.
