Default W2K Domain member accessing Win XP Pro Workgroup shares

The subject gives an idea of the problem I am having.

I have a laptop configured to authenticate into a Domain at work.
After work I hibernate the laptop and when I get home I want to access
shares configured on my Windows XP Pro desktop. The shares on the
desktop are reachable by another laptop configured to the same
workgroup called by the default name of WORKGROUP.

Question - can my laptop, brought out of hibernation, reach those
shares on my desktop which is not part of the same Domain? I can ping
my desktop but when I try to Add Network Connection from the laptop it
fails/times-out.

I also tried to log out and log in selecting my computer name from the
drop down list on the Domain dialog box. Bottom line: it wouldn't let
me do it. It didn't recognize my password. Yet the same password works
fine when I set the Domain entry to my normal office Domain name; even
though I am not connected to the work LAN.

Hi Brian,

You should be able to successfully add a network connection regardless
of whether it's a domain or workgroup at home. Without knowing anything
about your home network I would guess that you do not have local
administrative access to the laptop in order to create a new connection.

All member servers and workstations have a local SAM database used
for local authentication in a peer to peer network (workgroup). By
default domain members cache the last 10 successful domain logons for
local authentication in the event a DC cannot be reached. You need a
local
account in order to choose the computer name and authenticate against
the
local SAM.
