Default One DC not logging in users when other is down

Hey all,
I ahve 2 domain controllers at our main location. I had all of
the servers down today. I turned on domain controller 1 and started turning
on other servers after it was up and running. When I would try to login to
the other servers they wouldnt login to the domain. I started the second
domain controller and everything was fine after it came up. How can I make
sure that both server will take login requests?

Thanks,
James

In order to locate a Domain Controller clients need to be able to access
DNS. I am guessing that the second DC you started is the only DNS server.
If there are 10 Domain Controllers up it wont help you if your DNS server
isn't up. You also might find that the second DC is the only GC, although I
didn't think this being out of action prevented you from logging on anymore
(since WS03), I'd have to look it up to be sure.

If you only have 2 DCs then both should be DNS servers and Global Catalogs
as well.

You shouldn't need to do anything special for a DC to process logon
requests, apart from ensuring that DNS is available.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Both of the domain controllers are also DNS servers and global catalog
servers.

So were the servers that yo couldn't log on from configured with both
servers in the DNS server settings of the TCP/IP configuration?

Otherwise you have some troubleshooting to do. Refer to this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314861

I am assuming that Windows Server 2003 uses the same process as Windows XP
since there are only articles for W2K and WinXp.

Good Luck.

Hi James
Are the computers in a different IP Subnet, do you have the Active directory
sites and services properly configured, any errors in event log, are the
clients older clients like NT4, 98, etc... Is the PDCe online and available
to these clients?
Also run dcdiag and netdiag in the DC(s) and search for outpu errors

I hope that the information above helps you.
Have a Nice day.
