Windows Update not completing

I recnetly applied SP1 to my XP Home edition. I now cannot apply Windows
updates, the first update downloads but then stops and no further progress
appears to be made. I have tried several times. I have re-booted. There is
no problem with my internet connection I have disabled antivirus and shut
down firewall.
What's going on?
