I want to post a solution, hope it helps someone else.

This was the problem:
after installation of XP SP2 we cannot download and install critical
windows updates. Got error code 80072EFD.

PC is:
XP Workstation SP2
Internet Explorer browse via internal proxy server, ISA 2000
Firewall allows only proxy to surf the internet

Solution:
- go to services, stop the service microsoft firewall
- go to system control > security center > automatic updates.
set it to active
change the setting to notify, no automatic download and
installation

Then download with proxy behind will work.
