Default Support for AHCI/RAID SATA 2 HDD controllers?

It needs native drivers for Vista, especially if you running the 64-bit
platform. I recommend you create a logical partition for it, launch setup
from within Windows XP, and select the logical partition on which you will
install it. But report the issue to the manufacturer of the device.

Sounds like you realize that you have to use the Intel Matrix Storage driver
if you are in RAID mode (inbox drivers will work with AHCI or Emulation
mode). The XP/2003 64-bit version of this driver should work on Vista. You
will need to extract the drivers first, put the driver package on a floppy
(or removable USB device, etc.) and use the Advanced setup option, Load
drivers to get the driver installed.
