In recent days an intersting and VERY IRRITATING problem has surfaced-
BASICALLY it appears that I can no longer load and go to a given site
using IE6 by either clicking on Desktop Shortcuts that FORMERLY WORKED
***OR*** by clicking on an imbedded link in (eg.) an E-mail message
(such as those commonly used in commercial Email message from PC
Magazine, etc.

In more detail:

a) if I click on a Desktop shortcut containing (for example):
'www.microsoft.com', IE6 will launch BUT fail to take me to the site.
Instead I INVARIABLY get a message such as:

"Cannot find the file 'http://www.microsoft.com/' (or one of its
components). Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all
required libraries are available"

b) if I try to click on (eg.) an embedded url link in an Email
message, instead of the expected result I get a mesage:

"Choose program to open http://www.tse.com... (or whatever the URL
is).

Can anyone HELP ME fix this problem?

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Hi Toe - Well, two things you might want to try. Go to Start|Run and enter
"regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes). After you get a Success
message, re-boot. If that doesn't work, then check out the following
article and do the additional steps outlined there:

If that doesn't help, you might want to reset your associations. AT YOUR
OWN RISK, you can use Doug Knox's url Associations fix for xp, here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_url_shortcut_fix.zip BE SURE you
BACK UP your Registry before doing this fix. It's for XP, but I ___think___
it should be OK for Win2k. If you do have any problems, be sure you can
restore the original state, so BACK UP before you start.

Haven't had a chance to try anything yet but just want to say a
HEARTFELT THANKS for the (WOW!!!!) QUICK RESPONSES and the information
you all provided.

I'm pretty sure that somewhere in here is the info I need to get this
problem resolved. I'm not a novice at this stuff and my INSTINCTS
about where the source of the problem lay pretty much jibes with that
contained in the detailed info provided but you all (I'm pretty sure)
have saved me a LOT of 'digging'.

It may be a while until I get around to trying to apply the info
provided (I'm tired at the end of a long day, and I may want to back
up some objects/drives/my system before trying some of these
suggestions out but I'll let you know how it all works out.

(I THINK the problem first surfaced after I installed and then removed
Mozilla for a trial a few days ago... Kind of jibes with the 'default
browser' suggestion...).
