OK, make sure that account name "Clayton" is activated properly for network access, on each computer.

In a workgroup, you have to add and modify accounts locally, on each computer.
You'll have to go to CJslaptop, and do "net user clayton /active:yes" there.

For maximum use, though, user Clayton should be setup on each computer, with an identical, non-blank password.

Ok I added the user clayton on the desktop computer. they both have blank
passwords, and I even tried giving the user clayton administrative privilages
on the xp home computer, but it still isn't working.

OK, if we're talking about XP Home, then you're stuck with Simple File Sharing
and Guest authentication. So there you have to enable Guest for network access, and note the limitations.

i appologize that this may not be posted at the end of the thred but for
some reason when i click reply, this is the very bottom of where i can post.

I actually have my network working now. what i had to do is enter the
following into command prompt on the XP home computer

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -g Everyone
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -g Everyone

I had already tried with the first three lines, so when I was told to put
the second two aswell I had my doubts. Fortunatly it worked.

I would like to thank you for all your help. Although you may not have
givven the final solution i'm sure that the virus i got affected my computer
so much that everything i've done has been a step in fixing it. Thanks agin
