Hi. I posted this problem a few weeks ago (8/10/2006), but left town before
I could resolve it. I thought I would start over again. I have a network with several (up to 3) WinXP machines and one WinME machine connected using a US Robotics wireless router. Regardless of which computers are connected to the network, one of the WinXP machines, called Main, is not visible in its workgroup, both when the workgroup is viewed from Main and when it is viewed from one of the other machines. The computer can be viewed, however, by typing \\Main in an address bar, and it can be pinged. I want to know how to make it appear in the workgroup. Here are some things I've already tried. There is some diagnostics output pasted below for Main and one of the other WinXP machines that is working properly. I have tried: -disabling the firewalls -looking at LSP/Winsock corruption -setting NetBT to enabled -removing IPV6 Here is various outputs for two of the WinXP machines: For Main (the problematic computer): IPCONFIG /ALL: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : MAIN Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0C-6E-94-22-7A Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.123.102 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.123.254 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.123.254 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.123.254 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : August 13, 2006 9:41:52 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : August 20, 2006 9:41:52 PM BROWSTAT STATUS Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{5724F909-A225-4B42-8CB2-09D2EC410B27} Browsing is active on domain. Hi Brahm,
From what I've learned here, and possibly depending upon what version of drivers you have, the firewall is in the hardware. If it's a true hardware firewall, and it's designed with modern philosophy, by default, all services like SMBs (file sharing) are disabled. From Jack's experience, you have to run the firewall manager to enable them. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/08/firewall-behaviour-and-windows.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/0...d-windows.html If your version of the nVidia Access Manager (if you get that) doesn't work this way, or if you don't have the NAM in your driver package, I think it's time for you to contact nVidia Technical Support. If you do, will you PLEASE provide the problem tracking number here, as I am going to start researching this issue as a whole. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
